Biography

Marieke Steenhoek graduated from the conservatory of Amsterdam in 2004. She studied with Maarten Koningsberger and Margreet Honig and in addition to her studies there, she took lessons with Jard van Nes, Valérie Guillorit and Noelle Barker. She currently receives vocal coaching from Gemma Visser. She participated in the masterclass "Acting for Singers" at the Jekerstudio (Theatre School Maastricht) and received lessons from Yolande Bertsch, Helmert Woudenberg en Roland Velte a.o.

Prizes

In September 2006, she won the 1st prize at the Christina Deutekom Concours, as well as the audience prize offered by the "Friends of the National Travelling Opera"

Oratorio

In October 2008 Marieke performed for the first time together with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra as a soloist in the Nielsen-symphony conducted by Herbert Blomstedt. Fall 2007 she made her debut as a soloist with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir conducted by Ton Koopman. Earlier that year, she sang as a soloist with The Netherlands Bach Society performing a première of Ernst Grafs "Der Tod Jesu" u.t.d. of Jos van Veldhoven. From 2000 as a main soloist of the Arion Ensemble she toured a.o. France, Italy and Slovenia. She has sung "Elijah" (F.Mendelssohn), "St. Mattews-" and "St. Johns-" Passion (J.S.Bach), "Carmina Burana" (C.Orff), "Stabat Mater" (J.Haydn) and "Litaniae" (W.A.Mozart)

Opera

In 2010, Marieke made her debut at The Dutch National Opera in a Worldpremiere of "A Dogs Heart" by Alexander Raskatov. Early 2011 she sang the role of first Angel in "De Legende" of Peter Jan Wagemans and Summer 2014 she could be heard as Grimelda in the opera "Laika" of Martijn Padding, a co-production with the Holland Festival. Also, she sang the role of Estelle ("The Stronger" - H. Weisgall), Dorothea in the baroque-opera "Don Chisciotte" (Conti), Pat Nixon in the opera "Nixon in China" (John Adams), Donna Elvira ("Don Giovanni" - W.A. Mozart) and the role of Adele in "Die Fledermaus" (J.Strauss) u.d.o. J. van Maanen with AUKSO Extended Chamber Orchestra from Katowice (Pl). Other roles: Geraldine ("A Hand of Bridge" - S.Barber), Ingrate ("Un ballo dell´ Ingrata " - C.Monteverdi) and Laurey ("Oklahoma" - R. Rodgers and O. Hammerstein)

Modern repertoire

Besides opera and oratorio Marieke can be heard frequently in the modern repertoire. She sang several soprano solos including the world premiere of 'And Nothing Death' by Carlos Michans, 'Pli selon pli (Pierre Boulez) with the Doelenensemble', 'Out of Europe'(Bernard van Beurden) and 'Trois Poésies de la Lyrique Japonaise' by Igor Stravinsky. In 2014 she was one of the two soloists in the opera 'Into the Little Hill' of George Benjamin (Casa/Schauspiel, Essen - Germany). In 2016 she performed Luigi Nono's Il canto sospeso and Hoffmanns Betrugs-Lexicon in the festival 'Now! Word Up!' (Philharmonie, Essen - Germany).
